Kyle Davis returns with a bluntly self-examining new single, “The Last Line,” accompanied by behind-the-scenes shots in a mobile and voyeuristic music video that provides a rare view into the process of making recordings. The emotional tune, which will be on Davis’s upcoming record Jericho, produced by the great Don Dixon, combines emotion and poetic story-telling to invite listeners into a journey of struggle, realization, and strength.

Filmed in the same studio that birthed the song, the music video covers flirty glimpses that reflect the depth of an already deep-ass song — soulful vocals mixed with glimpses of real-life creation. Davis’s words conjure the heaviness of real life, with jagged juxtapositions of the banal and the sublime via images of superheroes and aerial heights. As the rains represent life’s unending tribulations, Davis’s indomitable performance indicates that even superheroes can persevere.

Humans can finish their sentences. At its heart, “The Last Line” reminds us to seek meaning in the last words and deeds that mark us. With a narrative we can all relate to, this single will be a favorite because of the desire for redemption and the quest for purpose. His deep vocal timbres, complemented by a melody that turns haunting and hopeful, convey a message that stays with a listener long after the music ends.

It’s a lovely accompaniment to the song’s poignant narrative story, quietly powerful in showing the art-making process. Anticipating an emotionally potent record in Jericho, “The Last Line” opens the door to a powerful type of storytelling that listeners shouldn’t sleep on.

As Kyle Davis reminds us, every struggle has a reason to be, and sometimes it’s the last line that counts.
