Phoneboy’s new single, “I Look Alive,” hits the indie rock scene like a breath of fresh air – honest, gritty, and relatable to the core. Blending confessional lyrics with their signature high-energy sound, the New Jersey band taps into the experience of putting on a brave face while dealing with inner turmoil. This is their first release since Moving Out, their 2023 album, and it’s got a new twist: Jordan Torres joins the lineup on vocals and keys, adding a fresh edge that fans are bound to appreciate.

The track captures that all-too-familiar feeling of struggling to keep it together at a social event, pretending everything’s fine while feeling anything but. Lyrics like “I look alive / But I feel like shit” and “Conversations with a stranger / And forget the words I spoke” offer a no-frills look at trying to navigate social anxiety. It’s a song that pulls no punches, giving a voice to the moments when we’re drowning in self-doubt yet trying to seem confident. You can almost picture yourself in the crowded room, hiding behind a cigarette and a half-hearted joke just to get by (“Ignore the aching in my bones / And focus on this cigarette.”)

But don’t let the heavy themes fool you – “I Look Alive” is no downer. The upbeat rhythm, punchy guitar riffs, and catchy chorus make it a track that demands to be played on repeat. Wyn Barnum, Ricky Dana, and Jordan Torres’ vocals intertwine, creating a dynamic soundscape that balances intensity with vulnerability. The driving energy in the music contrasts perfectly with the rawness of the lyrics, creating a song that’s as fun to rock out to as it is emotionally resonant. With Torres now in the mix, the band has a richer, fuller sound, and it feels like they’re moving into exciting new territory.

All in all, “I Look Alive” is a quintessential indie anthem for anyone who’s ever felt out of place but managed to keep going anyway. Phoneboy have managed to capture a slice of life that’s both incredibly specific and totally universal. Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to the band, this track is a must-listen.
