My Midnight Heart explores motherhood and identity in “anew”

Hailing from New York, the now Bristol-based artist, My Midnight Heart (a.k.a Angélica Allen) has just dropped a deeply personal and honest new track about her own journey with motherhood. “anew” speaks of the profound, life-altering experience of pregnancy and becoming a mother. While celebrating the miraculous aspects of this transition, it also touches on the poignant sense of letting go of one's former self, evoking the feeling of an 'ego-death.'

Written during the pregnancy of her second child, the artist shares, “Four years after my daughter’s birth I had only just begun to feel like myself again. My brain, my body, my blood finally felt like they belonged to me. I decided it would be my year. My moment. But when I realized I was pregnant with my son, I knew I would have to start the journey all over again.”

Her candidness is refreshing and empowering, as she doesn’t shy away from expressing both the highs and lows of her journey with motherhood. She continues, “I struggled so much reclaiming my identity with my firstborn, I wrote this song wanting to allow myself to enter a speculative space where I gave of myself easily… Opening to the possibility of being alchemized in the process.”

Sonically, “anew” demonstrates My Midnight Heart’s ability to craft mesmerizing avant-pop anthems, as she blends spellbinding synths with celestial arrangements. Drawing inspiration from artists like Janet Jackson and Kate Bush, she creates something wholly unique and brilliantly captivating.
